From our very first conversation our goal is to determine the needs of you, the client.

Often, our clients know exactly what it is they're looking for. But occasionally, the product needs to be developed from square one and designed within a specific set of requirements for manufacturing, quality control, budget, and deadline. This is where we at Linnett Studios truly shine. A few in-depth conversations, in person or by phone, and we're off and running!

Here’s an example of our process...

The assignment was to create a soft activity book for babies aged six months to three years. It needed to incorporate multiple play features such as a teether, windows, crinkle flaps, peek-a-boo elements, fun pokey-out bits, etc. It also needed to utilize a variety of bright fabrics and textures and have a "link" feature to enable the book to be easily clipped to a stroller, high chair or car seat.

Not only were we asked to design the structure of the book, but we also needed to write a short, simple story or poem and tie in the play features to the story.

And it all had to be approved by Disney. A tall order indeed!

Step 1

We created multiple thumbnail concepts in pencil showing several basic structural possibilities.

This is where Kate's drawing skills came to the fore.

Step 2

The structure is finalized and the storyline is introduced.

Here, we start to lay out the full-color licensed artwork, keeping within a certain color count.

Step 2

Step 3

Involves the design of the teething elements and coordinating linking rings.

The art is created in Photoshop with the sculpting specs provided by the engineers called out for the manufacturers.

Step 3

Step 4

The final technical art files are created in Illustrator after final approval by Disney and The First Years. Dielines and bleedlines have been laid out and a color key is created for the manufacturer's reference.
